Midwest Racing Roundup  4-19-10  By Tom Botos
Hey Racefans this past weekend was pretty good with both Bloomington and Gas City Speedways avoiding the rain showers to get there racing programs in. I did not make it to Gas City because I do not get off of work until 3:45 PM. I plan to make it to Gas City Speedway this Friday Night for there regular program of Nonwing Sprints,UMP Modifieds,UMP StreetStocks, and Thundercars. I do know that Union County (IN) Speedway is opening Friday Night May 7th but there website is offline. If any of you have information on this track please email me at
I interviewed several racefans for My Midwest Racing Fan Of The Week at Anderson Speedway.

My first fan is Les Helmick from Indianapolis,Indiana. Les Helmick is 55 years old and says that Leonard Basham is his favorite driver. His favorite tracks are Anderson Speedway and Plymouth Speedway. Les travels to watch the IOFS International Outlaw Figure 8 Series. Plymouth Speedway has been the farthest Les has traveled to watch a race. Les agrees with me that all tracks should allow small coolers to be brought in. Les stated that if he owned a track he would have fewer divisions and more reasonable prices on concession stand items. Les has been a racefan all of his life. Les has had family and friends race over the years. Les enjoys the IOFS Figure 8s the most of any traveling series.Les has been to such races as the 3hour World Figure Eight Championship at the Indianapolis Speedrome,The Salem Speedway 200,and the Sportsdrome (IN) Speedway 2 Hour Enduro for Extreme Winged Figure 8s! Les prefers the asphalt tracks over the dirt surfaces. Les prefers to go to a special event race over a regular show. I hope to run into Les again at the next IOFS racing event at Salem (IN) Speedway on Sunday May 23rd!

My next Midwest Racing Fan Of The Week is Brian Sparks age 42 of Indianapolis,Indiana. Brian's hometrack is the Indianapolis Speedrome. #18 Jeff Hizer of the IOFS series is Brian's favorite driver. Brian would like to make it to Plymouth and Salem Speedway more often. Brian's favorite touring series is the IOFS. Brian believes all tracks should allow small coolers to be brought in. Brian has been a racefan forten years.Brian would like to see more special events added to track schedules as he enjoys them much more. Brian belives all tracks should have scoreboards to keep the fans up to date on events at the track.
All of these fans of the week were sitting around me and were chit chatting about racing. I try to listen and interview these dedicated fans tell there stories of there favorite drivers, tracks, and touring series that they follow.

The next Midwest Racing Fan Of The Week is Matt Bond age 33 from Sheridan,Indiana. Matt's hometrack is the Anderson Speedway. Matt's favorite driver is the # 09 Andy Sherley. Matt would like to visit Winchester Speedway more often as a favorite track. Matt has traveled into Kentucky to follow the IOFS Series! Matt would like to see more special events on track schedules each year. Matt wants to see more enforcing of the rules especially when a driver is eliminated because of another careless driver! Matt would like to see either double file restarts or make lapped cars take the inside slow lane. Matt really enjoys The NIght Of Thrills and Season Chapionship Night where drivers put it all on the line!

Saturday Night I went to Anderson Speedway for the CRA Super Series Late Model 125 which was won by the #61 of Johnny Van Doorn from Michigan. Congrats to Johnny on his big win and the next time the CRA Super Series comes to the Anderson Speedway it will be for the annual Redbud 300 event on Monday July 26th. featuring Nascar star Kyle Busch!
Coming this Saturday Night April 24th is the NIght Of Thrills at Anderson Speedway featuring School Bus Figure 8's,Roll Over Contest,Trailer Races on the Figure 8!,also the Corkscrew race,Mini Cups, and the FWD Oval Divsion. They are forecasting rain here in the Indianapolis area this Friday and Saturday. I hope it blows over and does not rain out our racing weekend!
New Paris (IN) Speedway has there Season Opener on Sturday April 24th featuring Late Models,Street Stocks,Mini Stocks, and Pure Stocks. If you have never been to this track it is awesome in that they allow coolers and or snacks into the track where you can grill out hamburgers and hotdogs if u like. There is actually a place where you can "drive in" your car to where you can watch the races from your car!
