On Track

LarrE Ervin

The hard woods of the foothills are flashing colors over the mountains. The wind is still and the sun is bright. It’s noon and the racecars are on the track. They come off of turn four two abreast. Row on Row. Beautiful machine as bright as the nearby hills. In perfect formation they cross the starting line. The silver car on the pole has taken the lead. Up the steep banks of Cherokee Speedway’s turn one and down the banking of turn two. On to the backstretch. Into three and four. As they see the checker flag the silver car slows… as do all the other cars. He stops on the finish line. All the other racecars wait. Rock Gault has run his last lap at Cherokee. The track Mr. Gault ran for over 30 years has said good-bye to the man that made it what is was. The silver hearse moves again. Slowly they pull into victory lane with his body. His body is at rest after 77 years.  His memory will live as long as the stands fill with fans. His love for Cherokee Speedway will fly with the dust as racecars tear at his track each week. As his memory becomes legend his friends and family will remember him as just a man that loved a racetrack.
