Dirt Track Racing in Sumter Starts Again


Sumter Speedway is set to kick off its 52nd annual season of racing tonight, Saturday April 5, at the legendary 3/8 mile dirt track. The past few weeks, drivers and crews have been working frantically to prepare their cars for the first race. Now, after a long winter and two practice sessions, everyone is anxious to see if they have what it takes to bring home the trophy.


This season will consist of eight divisions of racing, including the addition of a new division called the young guns. This division is for kidsí ages ten to fifteen. There will also be four cylinder bombers, six cylinder bombers, mini stock, street stock, ridge runner, ladies, and crate latemodels.


All the drivers are ready to start their engines again and the fans are ready to see some great racing. Track promoters Wanda Duke and Pricilla Baker would like to extend an invitation to everyone to come and watch the exciting racing program. Tickets are sold at the track. Gates open at 5:00pm and racing starts at 7:30pm. Pit tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children twelve and under. Grandstand tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kidsí six to twelve, and free for kids five and under. All active military will be admitted free upon presentation of an active military ID. Concessions are provided in both the pits and grandstands. So, bring the whole family and cheer on your favorite driver and support the toughest little dirt track in the south, Sumter Speedway.
